St Cuthbert's Wing is an extension to a former chapel, now reconverted as a home, in the Dandenong Ranges.
Nestled among the tall gums of the Dandenong Ranges, St Cuthbert’s Chapel has lived many lives.
Once a modest timber chapel where the local community gathered, the weatherboard building now carries its history into a new chapter as a family home.
Its simple lines, timber walls and leadlight windows speak of its origins, while its adaptive reuse ensures it continues to be a place of warmth and belonging.
This project, St Cuthbert’s Wing, extends this story with a contemporary gesture that sits lightly against the old chapel.
Designed not to overshadow, but to accompany, the new wing takes cues from the rhythm and materiality of the weatherboard form, while opening itself to light, landscape and the needs of family life today.
This is a project about renewal through care. The original chapel remains the heart, imbued with memory and character, while the extension provides space for everyday rituals to unfold in harmony with the forest beyond.
Together, the old and new form a home that is both deeply rooted in its past and thoughtfully shaped for the future.
